The oldest known virtual reality (VR) machine dates back to the 1960s. It was called Sensorama, developed by Morton Heilig in 1962. Sensorama was a mechanical device that provided immersive experiences by simulating a 3D environment using a combination of stereoscopic 3D visuals, sound, vibrations, and even smells. It was not fully interactive like modern VR, but it was an early attempt at creating an immersive multimedia experience.
However, the first true VR system, with interactive features, was The Sword of Damocles, developed in 1968 by Ivan Sutherland and his student Bob Sproull at the University of Utah. It was a head-mounted display (HMD) system, considered one of the earliest prototypes of virtual reality. The Sword of Damocles was tethered to a computer and could generate simple wireframe 3D images, but it was very rudimentary compared to today's VR technology.
Both of these inventions were critical milestones in the development of virtual reality, but it wasn’t until much later that VR became more accessible and practical for widespread use.
